The Physical and Moral Values of Sport
"Sport finds support from the Church, by reason of everything good and healthy which it bears in itself. The Church cannot but encourage everything serving harmonious development of the human body, which is rightly regarded as the masterpiece of all creation, not only through its proportions, vigor, and beauty, but also and above all because God has made it the dwelling and instrument of an immortal soul, by infusing into it that "breath of life" (Gen 2.7) whereby man is made in his image and likeness. Then, if we consider the supernatural aspect, St. Paul's words are an enlightening admonition: "Do you not see that your bodies are members of Christ?... You must know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is within- the Spirit you have received from God...SO glorify God in your body" (1 Cor 6:15, 19-20)...
There we have glimpses of what revelation teaches us on the greatness and dignity of the human body, created by God and redeemed by Christ. This is why the Church never ceases recommending proper appreciation and employment of this marvelous instrument through suitable physical education such as shall, on the one hand, avoid turning into a cult of the body and, on the other hand, will train body and spirit in effort, courage, balance, sacrifice, nobility, fraternity, courtesy and, in a word, fair play. If you use sport this way, it will help you to become above all citizens who love social order and peace. "
